Pune to Get its Third Double-Decker Flyover at Kothrud Depot
Part of Metro Phase-2 Expansion
Pune is preparing to welcome its third double-decker flyover, which will be constructed at the Kothrud Depot. This flyover is an integral part of the Pune Metro Phase-2 expansion and is primarily designed to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the area. The route will extend along the Vanwadi to Chandni Chowk corridor.
PUNE, 10 NOV. Pune is preparing to add another significant project to its infrastructure with the upcoming construction of its third double-decker flyover. The structure, which will be built near the Kothrud Depot, is being developed by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) as a vital part of the Pune Metro Phase-2 expansion.
The primary goal of this new flyover is to provide much-needed relief from the city’s growing traffic congestion. The route is strategically planned to extend along the corridor from Vanwadi to Chandni Chowk. Officials anticipate that this intervention will substantially ease the vehicular bottleneck on Paud Road and the area surrounding Chandni Chowk, which are notorious for high traffic density.
The new project takes inspiration from the success of Pune's two existing double-decker flyovers located at Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk and Nal Stop. MahaMetro noted that both previous structures successfully improved traffic systems in their respective areas, which were previously severe choke points.
A crucial highlight of the Kothrud project, as confirmed by MahaMetro Director Atul Gadgil, is that it will require no land acquisition. Unlike the Nal Stop project where land had to be acquired, the Kothrud area has sufficient road width available. This advantage is expected to expedite the construction process and ensure that the work can be completed without major hurdles or prolonged traffic disruption.
The project is an integrated effort, encompassing more than just the vehicular flyover. It includes the construction of a 1.123-kilometer elevated Metro viaduct and will feature two new Metro stations—one at the Kothrud Bus Depot and the other at Chandni Chowk. While MahaMetro will initially finance the construction, they may approach the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for financial assistance if the need arises.
