PUNE, 10 NOV. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to develop a new Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield Highway to alleviate the constant traffic strain on the existing route. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been submitted to the Central Government for approval.
The total length of this high-speed corridor is 699 km, out of which 206 km falls within the state of Maharashtra. Once Central approval is secured, the objective is to complete this six-lane road within the next three years.
Key Project Features and Economic Impact
-
Project Cost: The estimated expenditure for the entire new highway is approximately ₹42,000 crore.
-
Maharashtra's Share: The construction cost for the 206 km section in Maharashtra is projected to be ₹8,000 crore, with an additional ₹10,000 crore allocated for land acquisition.
-
Connectivity: The highway will commence near Khopi on the proposed Pune Ring Road, which is being developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). There are discussions about integrating a portion of the Ring Road (from Urse on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway to Kelawade on the Satara Road) with the new greenfield highway.
-
High-Speed Corridor: The design permits vehicles to travel at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour.
-
Infrastructure: The plan includes tunnels (two in Satara and three in Sangli, though none needed in the flat Shirwal section of Pune district), interchanges, underpasses, and emergency facilities.
-
Economic Development: The project is expected to drive economic growth in less-developed areas. Plans are in place to create logistical parks, industrial hubs, and independent satellite cities near the highway.
-
Emergency Facilities: There is a proposal to construct a 5 km emergency airstrip (helipad) near both Pune and Bengaluru cities.
-
Land Requirement: Approximately five thousand acres of land need to be acquired in Maharashtra for the project.
The highway is expected to significantly boost agricultural and industrial exports and overall development in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
