The Solapur Municipal Corporation has initiated strict action against those responsible for lapses in the city’s sanitation system. As many as 101 Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) were identified across the city, prompting the civic administration to impose a fine of ₹1.01 lakh on the concerned contractor.
In addition, Health Inspectors Pandurang Kandi and Jitendra More, from the Solid Waste Management Department, have been suspended for failing to effectively supervise sanitation operations.
Following directions from Municipal Commissioner Dr. Sachin Ombase, an inspection of GVP locations and verification of photographs of the identified sites were carried out on September 29. The inspection found accumulated garbage at 101 locations.
As per Annexure-I of the contract, a penalty of ₹1,000 is prescribed for each GVP. Accordingly, a total penalty of ₹1,01,000 for the 101 locations will be recovered from the contractor’s bill for September.
The Commissioner has directed officials to implement permanent solutions at locations where garbage repeatedly accumulates, rather than merely removing the waste. Daily inspections of vulnerable locations falling under Ward Offices 3, 4, 7 and 8 have also been ordered.
Following deficiencies observed during the Commissioner’s inspection, suspension action was taken against Pandurang Kandi and Jitendra More under the Maharashtra Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1979.
Responsibility for monitoring the GVP elimination drive has been assigned to Assistant Engineer Irshad Jartar, Junior Engineer Deepak Kumbhar and Junior Engineer Abhijit Birajdar. The civic administration has also stated that accountability will be fixed at the levels of the concerned Health Inspectors and the Chief Health Inspector.
The Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens not to dump garbage in public places and to hand over waste only to the designated garbage collection vehicles.
