Ahead of the 38th Senate meeting of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Senate members staged a silent protest against the functioning of Vice-Chancellor Dr. Prakash Mahanvar, displaying posters outside the meeting venue.
The members alleged that decisions taken during Senate meetings in the interest of the university and students were subsequently being changed without adequate consultation. They expressed their displeasure over what they described as the administration’s approach towards elected Senate members.
Senate members Rohini Tadvalkar, Sudarshan Yadav, Adv. Sunanda Bhagat, Suraj Maske, Sanjay Salunkhe, Varsharani Kamurti and Ajinkya Deshmukh participated in the protest.
The members stood at the entrance to the meeting hall holding placards carrying messages questioning the Vice-Chancellor’s style of functioning, including one that read, “Vice-Chancellor or Dictator?”
Sudarshan Yadav also drew attention by wearing a placard around his neck that questioned who was allegedly treating university employees and officers like “slaves.”
While the members were standing at the entrance and registering their protest, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Prakash Mahanvar and Secretary Dr. Atul Lakde proceeded into the hall for the Senate meeting.
Yadav alleged that the university administration was not listening to the concerns of Senate members and that they were repeatedly being subjected to disrespectful treatment. He said the silent protest was intended to highlight the members’ grievances without disrupting the meeting through slogans.
The protest brought to the fore the reported differences between sections of the Senate and the university administration, with members seeking greater attention to their concerns and to decisions taken in the interest of students and the university.
