The Maharashtra Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti, an organization dedicated to the propagation and promotion of the Hindi language and currently headed by a senior BJP Member of Parliament, has reportedly taken a pivotal decision regarding the promotion and curriculum for Hindi learning in the state. This development is significant as it follows a recent period of political controversy and public outrage over the state government's short-lived attempt to enforce Hindi as a compulsory subject from Class 1 under the National Education Policy's Three-Language Formula, a resolution that was ultimately withdrawn.
The Samiti, under its current leadership, has opted to focus its strategy on expanding Hindi's influence through non-coercive methods. These measures primarily involve continuing to conduct various centennial examinations and specialized, voluntary language courses designed to encourage citizens, especially students, to embrace Hindi as the country's language of communication. The core philosophy guiding this decision is to advocate for Hindi's study as a national link language while strictly upholding the primacy and respect due to Marathi as the state's mother tongue and official language. The decision aims to strike a necessary balance, avoiding any hint of mandatory imposition which was the key trigger for the widespread protests that compelled the state government to roll back its earlier policy.
