Need for Organ Donation Festivals in Colleges to Inspire a Life-Saving Movement Among Youth
Mumbai | Ramesh Autade
With thousands of patients across India losing their lives every year while waiting for organ transplants, there is an urgent need to promote organ donation awareness among young people. To address this challenge, colleges and universities should organise an annual "Organ Donation Festival", said Kisan Kadam, President of the Environment Protection Committee.
Kadam stressed that the country's youth possess the power to bring about meaningful social change. Students have the ability to influence families and communities, making educational institutions the ideal platform for spreading awareness about the importance of organ donation.
Promoting Awareness Through Engaging Activities
He suggested that an Organ Donation Festival could feature a wide range of awareness programmes, including lectures by transplant specialists, interaction sessions with organ transplant recipients, felicitation of families who have donated organs, and competitions such as painting, slogan writing, essay writing, reels, and short films.
Other activities could include awareness rallies, street plays, and organ donation pledge campaigns. Interested students could also be provided with scientific information about organ donation and given the opportunity to register as voluntary organ donors.
Dispelling Myths and Encouraging Participation
According to Kadam, misconceptions and fear surrounding organ donation continue to discourage many people from making informed decisions. He believes that educating young people with accurate scientific information can help eliminate these myths and encourage greater public participation.
"If every student graduating from a college becomes an ambassador for organ donation, the movement can evolve into a nationwide public campaign within a few years," he said.
Call for a Statewide and National Initiative
Kadam urged the State Government, Health Department, medical colleges, universities, and non-governmental organisations to jointly organise an annual National Organ Donation Festival across educational institutions.
He said such an initiative could inspire millions of young people to pledge organ donation, ultimately helping save the lives of thousands of patients awaiting transplants.
"A college festival should not be limited to entertainment alone; it should also become a celebration that gives new life to society. If the message of organ donation reaches every household through students, it can bring hope and a new beginning to countless lives," Kadam said.
