Kolhapur is set to get a new 500-bed district hospital as part of the Maharashtra government’s ambitious Pragati public health improvement project aimed at modernising and strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
The state Cabinet has approved the state-level project, which seeks to make public healthcare more accessible, high-quality, technology-driven and integrated. The project will strengthen healthcare infrastructure across five districts by adding a total of 1,600 beds.
Under the plan, new 500-bed district hospitals will be established in Kolhapur and Nanded, while Pune will receive a 200-bed referral services hospital. The existing 200-bed district hospitals in Latur and Nagpur will also be upgraded.
The capital expenditure for these infrastructure projects is estimated at around ₹1,500 crore. Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar said strengthening diagnostic, treatment and referral services at the district level would help reduce the unnecessary burden on tertiary-care hospitals.
₹4,250-Crore Project for 2026–31
The Pragati project will be implemented from 2026 to 2031, with an estimated overall allocation of ₹4,250 crore. The project is aimed at transforming Maharashtra’s public health infrastructure through modern technology, improved services and stronger healthcare systems.
The project will give special emphasis to the prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases. Healthcare capacity for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, mental health, diabetic retinopathy, fatty liver disease, palliative care and hospice services will be strengthened.
Focus on Early Cancer Detection
Technology and manpower required for the early detection and treatment of cancer will also be strengthened under the project. The government aims to improve the availability of specialised healthcare services closer to patients at the district level.
Digital Transformation of Healthcare
The Maharashtra Health Technology Mission will be used to accelerate digital transformation in the health sector. The project will promote digital health records, integration of health information systems, telemedicine and expansion of technology-enabled healthcare services.
The objective is to bring healthcare closer to citizens through effective use of technology, improve coordination between different levels of healthcare delivery and ensure continuity of care for patients.
Minister Prakash Abitkar said the Pragati project would significantly transform Maharashtra’s public healthcare system and help citizens access more affordable, quality and integrated healthcare services.
