Pune Rural Police said here today that the murder of young businessman Ketan Agrawal was not a spur-of-the-moment act but the result of a carefully planned conspiracy by his fiancee. Sia Goyal, 20, had reportedly been in a relationship with 23-year-old cricketer Chetan Choudhary, whom she met through acquaintances in Pune’s Market Yard area.
The couple wanted to marry, but Sia’s family allegedly opposed the relationship due to differences in social and financial status. Sia’s father, Praveen Goyal, runs a successful dry fruits and spices business, while Chetan, despite being the son of businessman Babulal Choudhary and aspiring to play Ranji Trophy cricket, was not considered a suitable match by the family.
As a result, Sia was engaged in February to 25-year-old Ketan Agrawal, a US-educated businessman associated with his family’s construction enterprise. The wedding was scheduled for November. Investigators believe Sia feared that eloping with Chetan after the engagement would bring embarrassment to her family. Police allege that she then conspired with Chetan to remove Ketan from the picture permanently.
The probe has revealed that an earlier plan to kill Ketan during a trip to Bali failed. Another attempt was allegedly considered during a visit to Lohagad Fort on June 14, but the plan was abandoned. The final plot was allegedly executed on June 19, Sia’s birthday. Police say that a day earlier, she persuaded Ketan to join her for a trek to Lohagad Fort. As per the alleged plan, Chetan had already reached the location. While Ketan was walking ahead on a narrow trail, Chetan reportedly approached from behind and, with Sia’s assistance, pushed him into a deep gorge. The accused then allegedly tried to portray the incident as an accidental fall.
