A river is not merely a channel through which water flows; it is a living stream that connects nature, culture and civilization. Rivers are the foundation of life, culture and human progress. When rivers dry up, civilizations and cultures decline along with them," said Water man of India Dr. Rajendra Singh while addressing a gathering at the launch of the Hindi and Marathi edition of his acclaimed book ‘Purnarjiveet Nadi Baddah’.
The book launch was organized by MIT Vishwaprayag University at the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research, Training and Human Development Institute (SARTHI) Auditorium in Pune. Originally written in Hindi by Dr. Rajendra Singh and translated into Marathi by Rita Rodrigues, the book was formally released by eminent environmentalist Dr. Rajendra Shende and senior social activist Jayaji Paikrao, in the presence of Prof. Swati Karad Chate, Executive President of MIT Vishwaprayag University, and Prof. Dr. Gopalakrishna Joshi, Founding Vice-Chancellor.
The event was held under the blessings of Prof. Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad, Founder President of MAEER's MIT Group of Institutions. During this occasion Raghavendra M. Chate, Director – Strategy & Operations; Prof. Prabha Kasliwal, Project Director and Pranesh Murnal, Registrar were present along with distinguished academicians, environmental experts, water conservationists, social leaders and representatives from the industry.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajendra Singh observed that Pune has long been recognised as a city of education, culture and progressive thought. However, he expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the rivers flowing through the city. "The changing character of rivers reflects the erosion of a region's cultural identity. Reviving rivers is an urgent necessity and water conservation cannot remain the sole responsibility of governments, it requires the collective participation of every citizen," he said.
While delivering the keynote address, eminent environmentalist Dr. Rajendra Shende emphasized that environmental protection cannot be achieved through policies and international agreements alone. "The real transformation will come through universities, young people and active community participation. Water conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development are deeply interconnected, making the integration of education, research and community engagement the need of the hour," he remarked.
The programme commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Welcoming the dignitaries, Prof. Swati Karad Chate highlighted MIT Vishwaprayag University's commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, water conservation and social responsibility. "At MIT Vishwaprayag University, our mission extends beyond delivering quality education, we strive to nurture environmentally conscious and socially responsible citizens. The book ‘Purnarjiveet Nadi Baddah’ will inspire greater public participation in water conservation and serve as a valuable reference for the younger generation," she said.
During introductory address, Prof. Dr. Gopalakrishna Joshi, Founding Vice-Chancellor, explained the University's vision behind publishing this book. "Water conservation and environmental protection should not remain confined to academic curricula. They must translate into meaningful action by students and society. This publication is a step towards inspiring such action," he noted. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Prabha Kasliwal.
