Mumbai Police detained National Students’ union of India (NSUI) Mumbai President Pradyumn Yadav from his residence, hours before union Home Minister Amit Shah was scheduled to arrive in the city, officials said here on Sarturday .
According to NSUI Mumbai, Yadav and other party workers were planning to meet Shah and question him over the alleged use of force against students during recent protests, including incidents involving lathi charges and pellet guns.
“NSUI Mumbai workers were going to ask Amit Shah ji why lathis and pellet guns were used against students,” the student body said in a statement, alleging that Yadav was detained from his home earlier in the morning.
Police have not yet publicly stated the specific grounds for the detention. Preventive detentions are commonly carried out during VVIP visits in Mumbai as part of law-and-order and security arrangements.
NSUI criticised the action, alleging that it was an attempt to suppress dissent. “The question remains the same — students want answers,” the organisation said.
Yadav has also faced police action in the past. In 2022, he was arrested by Mumbai Police after a video surfaced showing him cutting a birthday cake with a sword-like weapon. He was booked under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the Mumbai Police Act.
Shah is on a two-day visit to Mumbai, with security arrangements significantly strengthened across the city for his scheduled engagements.
