Mumbai Civic Employees to Stage Sit-In Protest on October 23 Over Old Pension Scheme

Mumbai | Ramesh Autade

Employees of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will stage a sit-in protest outside the civic headquarters on October 23, demanding the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and the withdrawal of the decision to introduce the National Pension System (NPS).

Labour leader Ashok Jadhav announced the protest at a press conference held at the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh.

Trade unions have opposed the civic body's decision regarding the NPS. According to the unions, the BMC's standing committee has approved a proposal to transfer approximately ₹6,219 crore to the NPS, comprising a 10% contribution from DC-1 employees and a 14% contribution from the municipal corporation. The proposal is scheduled to be placed before the BMC General Body for approval on October 23.

The unions are demanding that municipal employees be given the option of the Old Pension Scheme, in line with the Maharashtra government's policy.

They have also sought an ex-gratia payment of ₹50,000 along with the October salary for permanent employees as well as contractual and daily-wage workers, health department staff, teachers, fire brigade personnel and other municipal employees.

Labour leaders Shashank Rao, Ashok Jadhav, Baba Kadam, Prakash Jadhav and Vaman Kavisakar were present at the press conference.
