Anti-Encroachment Drive or Mere Show? Encroachments Return to Wai Market Despite Major Crackdown

Roads Once Again Choked by Illegal Parking and Obstructions; Citizens Question the Effectiveness of the Municipal Council’s Much-Publicised Action

Anti-Encroachment Drive or Mere Show? Encroachments Return to Wai Market Despite Major Crackdown

WAI, Correspondent

Encroachments have once again resurfaced in Wai’s market area and along major roads, raising questions about the effectiveness of the municipal council’s anti-encroachment drive conducted just a month ago. Despite a large deployment of personnel and machinery during the operation, vehicles are reportedly being parked indiscriminately on roads to unload goods, shopfronts are obstructing public thoroughfares, and traffic congestion has returned.

Citizens are now asking a pointed question: What was achieved through the much-publicised operation if the situation has returned to square one within weeks?

During the previous drive, the Wai Municipal Council removed several roadside stalls, barricades and other obstructions. However, residents allege that the impact was short-lived, with encroachments and traffic violations reappearing soon after the operation ended. This has also raised questions about whether enforcement was uniform or whether certain individuals escaped action due to their influence.

Vehicles Parked in the Middle of Roads Disrupt Traffic

The market area continues to face severe congestion as vehicles are reportedly parked in the middle of roads to load and unload goods at shops. The movement of goods by workers further disrupts traffic, making it difficult even for two-wheelers to pass through certain stretches.

According to residents, when traffic police intervene and ask drivers to move their vehicles, some comply temporarily but soon park elsewhere, recreating the same obstruction. Citizens believe that the lack of sustained enforcement has weakened the deterrent effect of the authorities’ actions.

Traffic Police Instructions Allegedly Ignored

Residents have also complained that some motorists respond rudely and argue with traffic police when asked to remove illegally parked vehicles. Such incidents, they allege, make enforcement increasingly difficult.

Citizens question the effectiveness of asking a vehicle to move from one spot only for it to be parked illegally at another location shortly afterwards. They are demanding consistent enforcement rather than temporary measures that fail to address the underlying problem.

One-Day Crackdown, but Who Is Accountable for the Expense?

The earlier anti-encroachment drive involved municipal staff, machinery, vehicles, fuel and police personnel. Public money and administrative resources were deployed for the operation.

Residents are now asking who will be held accountable if such an expensive exercise produces results lasting only a few days. Expenditure on staff, diesel, machinery and police deployment has added to concerns about whether the operation delivered value for public money.

Was the exercise intended to provide a lasting solution, or was it merely a one-day publicity event? Citizens want the municipal council to explain the outcome of the operation and demonstrate measurable improvements on the ground.

Allegations of Selective Action: Small Vendors Targeted, Influential Encroachments Spared?

Some residents have alleged that roadside stalls belonging to ordinary families were removed, while encroachments allegedly linked to influential individuals were left untouched.

These allegations have raised concerns about fairness and consistency in enforcement. Citizens have demanded that the municipal council publish the complete record of the anti-encroachment operation, including the list of structures removed, the action taken against offenders and the expenditure incurred.

Making these details public, they argue, would help establish whether the drive was conducted impartially. The allegations, however, require verification by the authorities.

Wai’s Traffic Management Plan Still on Paper?

Earlier, Wai Municipal Council President Anil Sawant had reportedly spoken to the media about preparing a traffic management plan for the city. However, the continuing congestion in the market area has prompted residents to question when the plan will be implemented.

Narrow roads, unauthorised parking and vehicles obstructing traffic during the unloading of goods continue to inconvenience pedestrians and commuters. Citizens want clarity on whether the proposed plan has been finalised and, if so, when its provisions will be implemented.

A traffic management plan, residents argue, will have little practical value unless it is enforced consistently and supported by effective parking arrangements and designated spaces for loading and unloading goods.

Citizens Demand Sustained Action, Not Just Announcements

Residents are urging the municipal council and police to move beyond meetings, warnings and one-day enforcement campaigns. They want action against encroachments and illegal parking to be carried out consistently, without yielding to political or social pressure.

Citizens have called on Wai Police Station Inspector Pradeep Suryawanshi to direct traffic police personnel to maintain strict and regular enforcement in the market area. They have also demanded fines against vehicles obstructing roads and stronger action against repeat offenders in accordance with the law.

Removing an encroachment only to allow it to reappear at the same location undermines the purpose of enforcement, residents contend. They want the authorities to ensure that cleared spaces remain free of obstructions.

Wai’s Roads Need a Permanent Solution

With traffic congestion once again affecting daily life, residents are waiting to see whether the Wai Municipal Council will move beyond a show of force and introduce lasting measures to keep roads clear.

Citizens are demanding firm, fair and continuous enforcement, effective implementation of the traffic management plan, transparency in municipal spending and equal treatment of all violators.

The key question remains: Will the administration deliver a permanent solution, or will Wai’s roads continue to be caught in the same cycle of encroachment, temporary action and renewed congestion?
