Priyanka Gandhi remembers Indira Gandhi on 42nd Martyrdom Anniversary, calls her 'free as the sky, deep as the ocean'
New Delhi, Correspondent
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday paid an emotional tribute to her grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 42nd martyrdom anniversary, remembering her as a woman whose strength, resilience and brilliance transcended ordinary descriptions.
In a deeply personal post on social media platform X, Priyanka recalled the personality of the former Prime Minister in evocative words, writing: "What a beautiful woman she was! Free as the sky, deep as the ocean, resilient as the earth and brighter than fire."
Her tribute, marked by affection and admiration, reflected the family's remembrance of Indira Gandhi beyond her public life as one of India's most consequential political leaders.
Indira Gandhi, India's first and so far only woman Prime Minister, was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by two of her security personnel at her official residence in New Delhi. Her killing sent shockwaves across the country and was followed by one of the most turbulent periods in independent India's history.
Born on November 19, 1917, Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from January 1980 until her assassination. Her tenure witnessed several defining developments in India's political, economic and foreign policy landscape, including the 1971 war with Pakistan that resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.
Her political legacy, however, remains a subject of considerable debate, particularly over the Emergency imposed between June 1975 and March 1977, when civil liberties were curtailed, opposition leaders were jailed and press restrictions were enforced.
October 31 is observed every year as Indira Gandhi's death anniversary, with tributes recalling her contribution to the country's political history and the circumstances surrounding her assassination. Priyanka Gandhi's message stood apart from conventional political tributes, offering a granddaughter's intimate and affectionate recollection of a woman whose life continues to occupy a significant place in India's national and political memory.
