Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his Balidan Diwas, describing him as a distinguished patriot, scholar and statesman whose lifelong dedication to national development continues to inspire generations of Indians.
In a message posted on social media platform X, the Prime Minister remembered Mookerjee’s contributions to public life and highlighted his commitment to national interests.
“On his Balidan Diwas, I pay homage to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a distinguished patriot, scholar and statesman who dedicated his life to India’s development,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister praised Mookerjee’s courage and conviction, saying his legacy remains relevant in contemporary India.
“His unwavering conviction, courage in public life and commitment to national interest continue to inspire generations. Dr. Mookerjee’s sacrifice remains etched in our collective memory,” Modi said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to nation-building, Modi said India’s development journey would continue to be guided by the ideals championed by Mookerjee.
“We reaffirm our commitment to building a strong and developed India, guided by the values he cherished and served till his last breath,” the Prime Minister added.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, is remembered for his advocacy of national unity and his opposition to the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. He died on June 23, 1953, while in detention in Jammu and Kashmir after launching a movement against the permit system that restricted the entry of Indian citizens into the state. His death is commemorated annually as Balidan Diwas by the Bharatiya Janata Party and affiliated organisations.
The BJP regards Mookerjee as one of its foremost ideological inspirations, and party leaders across the country observe the day by paying tributes and recalling his contributions to India’s political and national discourse.
