Sudip-Bhupender Meeting Deepens TMC Crisis as Rebel MPs Push for Separate Identity
New Delhi, June 13
The internal turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) intensified on Saturday after senior party leader and veteran parliamentarian Sudip Bandyopadhyay met Union Minister and senior BJP leader Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi, fuelling speculation of a widening rebellion against the leadership of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The meeting assumed greater political significance as Bandyopadhyay was accompanied by dissident TMC Lok Sabha MP Satabdi Roy, who has emerged as one of the prominent faces of the growing revolt within the party. Sources said the two leaders travelled together from Kolkata before heading to Yadav's residence in the national capital.
Political circles view the development as a sign of increasing coordination between rebel TMC lawmakers and sections of the BJP leadership. The dissident camp claims it enjoys the support of 19 to 20 MPs from the party's 28-member Lok Sabha contingent, although the numbers have not been independently verified.
Along with Roy, Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has reportedly taken a leading role in mobilising support among dissatisfied lawmakers. The rebel bloc is understood to be preparing a formal approach to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking recognition as a separate parliamentary group.
According to sources, the dissidents intend to argue that they represent the "real TMC" and therefore deserve independent status within Parliament. Leaders associated with the faction have expressed confidence that they possess the numbers required to support their claim.
The rebels have also signalled a willingness to extend outside support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government on key legislative matters while functioning independently in the Lok Sabha. Such a move could strengthen the ruling coalition's position during crucial parliamentary votes.
Adding to the political drama, senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari is expected to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday and may meet the rebel MPs ahead of their proposed interaction with the Speaker.
The developments have triggered intense political calculations ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Observers note that additional support in the Lok Sabha could prove significant for the NDA, particularly if the government seeks to push through major legislative or constitutional measures.
While neither the TMC nor the BJP has officially commented on the implications of the meeting, the public appearance of a senior TMC strategist alongside rebel MPs and a BJP minister is likely to deepen concerns within the ruling party in West Bengal. The coming days are expected to be crucial as the dissident camp attempts to demonstrate its strength and secure parliamentary recognition.
