The Chinese mainland criticised Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te on Wednesday for publicly siding with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi over her recent remarks on Taiwan, slamming Lai's statements and actions as "disgusting."

At a press conference, Peng Qing'en, a spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, accused Lai of "eating the food of ingratiation towards Japan and engaging in acts of selling out Taiwan." Peng said Lai's words and deeds once again exposed his "ugly face of forgetting the heritage, betraying the motherland."

The spokesperson warned the Democratic Progressive Party authorities that "any act relying on external forces will only lead to disgrace, and any traitor who betrays the nation will inevitably face the judgment of justice."

Peng was responding to a question on Takaichi's recent comments on Taiwan, which have triggered sustained protests across the island. Lai defended her and posted a photo of himself eating Japanese cuisine on social media, claiming it showed the "solid friendship" between the island and Japan.

The mainland spokesperson said Takaichi's remarks grossly interfered in China's internal affairs, seriously violated international law and basic norms governing international relations, gravely undermined the post-war international order, and seriously breached the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan. Peng urged the Japanese side to "immediately reflect and correct its mistake" and withdraw the "erroneous statements" concerning Taiwan.

According to reports, the US Navy has dispatched a warship through the Taiwan Strait. This warship has reached the Taiwan Strait at a time when China has surrounded the self-governing Taiwan.

The 7th Fleet of the US Navy says that the US warship reaching the Taiwan Strait on Sunday is normal procedure. It's part of the routine. He also told that the warship has passed through a corridor in the strait, which is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state.

China is not backing down

At the same time, China is continuously conducting exercises. This information has been given by the Ministry of Defense of Taiwan itself. On Monday morning, the Defense Ministry said that 18 Chinese military aircraft and four naval ships have been seen around Taiwan in the past 24 hours. He said that China is constantly trying to bring Taiwan under its control.

Dispute between Taiwan and China

About seven decades ago, when civil war was going on in China, the Communist Party defeated the democratic parties. The defeated democratic leaders fled to the island of Taiwan. Taiwan transitioned from an authoritarian regime to a democracy in the 1990s and is now ranked as one of the freest jurisdictions in Asia by the US-based non-profit organization Freedom House. However, China's authoritarian Communist Party continues to lay claim to Taiwan. China says that Taiwan is a part of China and if force has to be used to get it, it will not back down from it.
