Trump’s Statement and Concerns

In a post on social media, President Trump expressed frustration over India’s increased defense and trade cooperation with Russia and China. He specifically pointed out India’s significant military purchases from Russia, saying, “India is one of Russia’s biggest arms buyers.”

Trump stated that even though India is considered a friend, the trade volume between the two nations remains unbalanced. According to him, “India imposes some of the highest import tariffs in the world,” making it difficult for American products to penetrate the Indian market. Therefore, starting August 1st, a 25% tariff will be enforced on a wide range of Indian exports.

He further commented, “Everything is not okay between us,” hinting at growing diplomatic and economic friction.

Impact on India-U.S. Trade

The United States is one of India’s most significant trading partners. In 2024, India exported goods worth around $81 billion to the U.S., accounting for approximately 17.7% of India’s total exports. India currently enjoys a trade surpluswith the U.S., meaning it exports more than it imports from the country.

Experts believe this new tariff policy could severely impact India’s economy. According to SBI Research, a 15–20% tariff could result in a 3–3.5% drop in Indian exports. Economic analysts estimate that the impact on India’s GDP could range from 0.16% to 2.1%, posing a substantial challenge for Indian exporters.

Trump's Repeated Claims on India-Pakistan Ceasefire

In a related press interaction, President Trump once again claimed credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire, stating that his intervention was key in de-escalating tensions between the two nations. Trump reiterated that he had personally urged India to resolve the conflict with Pakistan peacefully. Despite India’s repeated denials of any external mediation, Trump has brought up this point over 20 times publicly, emphasizing his diplomatic influence.

The new tariffs mark a significant shift in U.S.-India relations under Donald Trump’s leadership. While both nations have maintained strong strategic ties, this move could signal deeper geopolitical tensions. India now faces the dual challenge of managing its global partnerships while safeguarding its export-driven sectors from serious economic fallout.

Trump posted an AI-generated video on his social media platform, Truth Social, depicting Obama’s fictional arrest, along with a caption declaring, “No one is above the law.” The post comes amid renewed claims by Trump’s circle that the Obama administration manipulated the 2016 presidential election.

The AI video shows Obama saying, “No one is above the law, especially the president.” Following this, clips appear of other former U.S. presidents and political leaders echoing the same statement. The video then cuts to a dramatized scene where Obama is seen sitting with Trump inside the White House office. Two FBI agents enter, handcuff Obama, and drag him away, as Trump watches and laughs.

In the next scene, Obama appears in a bright orange jumpsuit, sitting solemnly inside a prison cell. Notably, Trump shared this AI-generated video without any disclaimer acknowledging that it is fictional. The move has sparked significant backlash, with many condemning it as misleading and inflammatory.

Fraud Allegations Against Obama Administration
Tulsi Gabbard, now a key intelligence figure in the Trump administration, has accused the Obama administration of orchestrating a fraudulent narrative surrounding Russian interference in the 2016 elections. She claimed that Obama and his senior officials knowingly fabricated the Russia-collusion story to undermine Donald Trump's legitimate victory.

Gabbard is calling for a criminal investigation and legal action. She specifically accused former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former FBI Director James Comey of producing false intelligence reports. Gabbard called this a “treasonous conspiracy” designed to sabotage Trump’s presidency and form the basis of a long-term political attack.

She further alleged that the Obama administration deliberately leaked classified information to the press to circulate false narratives. According to her, prominent media outlets like The Washington Post helped spread claims that Russia carried out a cyberattack to influence Trump’s win. Gabbard added that an intelligence report released on January 6, 2017, was also based on a discredited document already deemed unreliable.

Criticism and Legal Concerns
Trump’s use of AI-generated media to portray a former president’s arrest without disclaimers has raised serious ethical and legal questions. Critics argue that such tactics risk blurring the line between satire and disinformation — especially in a highly polarized political climate. Meanwhile, calls for accountability and investigations continue to grow, as the political battle over the 2016 election shows no signs of ending.

This new step has been taken while the US State Department is planning to verify social media before granting visas. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio (Social Media Vetting) said in an internal cable seen by Reuters that the department plans to issue updated guidelines on verifying the social media of student and exchange visitor applicants. Consulates have been recommended to stop scheduling such visa appointments.

The State Department's broad plan to make social media vetting mandatory for all international students studying in the US (Visa Interviews), a move that could disrupt the student visa process. It could put financial strain on American universities. But what is social media vetting?

What is social media vetting?

Social media vetting involves verifying an applicant’s online activity to determine their eligibility for admission. Officials will review prospective students social media profiles to determine whether they should be allowed to study at U.S. institutions. The initiative is seen as part of a broader crackdown on international students by the Trump administration following widespread pro-Palestinian protests on U.S. campuses last year.

The State Department directive did not specify what kind of broad vetting the administration was planning. But it did mention executive orders to keep out terrorists and combat anti-Semitism. For example, could a student who posted a photo of a Palestinian flag on X’s account be subject to additional vetting? That’s not clear, Politico reported.

Students and faculty have also been subject to action in the past over social media posts. In March, Brown University professor Dr. Rasha Alawi was expelled after photos of Iran’s supreme leader were found on her phone. She also attended the funeral of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in February.

What about scheduled interviews?

For students who have already scheduled their appointments, there is nothing to worry about. Rubio said that these scheduled appointments can proceed according to current guidelines, but that available appointments that have not already been taken should be canceled. The department is reviewing its current operations and procedures for screening and vetting student and exchange visitor (F, M, J) visa applicants. Based on that review, it plans to issue guidance for expanded social media screening for all such applicants, it said.
