Mumbai, Varsha Karanje

The results of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections have reinforced the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) dominance in local body politics, while also exposing challenges for Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Mahayuti alliance in certain regions.

Of the 17 vacant Legislative Council seats, six were elected unopposed earlier, while voting was held for the remaining 11 seats. The outcomes are being viewed as politically significant amid ongoing discussions around opposition realignments and internal developments within Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).

Nashik Delivers Biggest Surprise

The most talked-about result came from the Nashik Local Authorities Constituency, where rebel BJP leader and independent candidate Gokul Gite defeated Mahayuti-backed candidate Narendra Darade.

Out of 618 votes cast, 13 were declared invalid, leaving 605 valid votes. The victory quota was fixed at 303 votes. Gite secured an impressive 357 votes in the first round, comfortably crossing the required mark, while Darade received 248 votes. As Gite surpassed the quota immediately, no second round of counting was required.

Political observers have described the result as a significant setback for the Shinde-led camp and the Mahayuti alliance in Nashik.

BJP Strengthens Grip in Sangli-Satara

In the Sangli-Satara Local Authorities Constituency, BJP candidate Dhairyashil Kadam registered a decisive victory over NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) candidate Abhaysinh Jagtap by a margin of 301 votes.

The result is being seen as further evidence of the BJP's strong organizational network and influence in western Maharashtra.

Congress Fails to Open Account in Amravati

In Amravati Local Authorities Constituency, BJP leader Pravin Pote-Patil won the seat for the third consecutive term with 390 votes.

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi candidate Nilesh Vishwakarma secured 31 votes, while Congress candidate Harshjit Deshmukhfailed to receive a single vote, highlighting the party's weak performance in the constituency.

BJP Registers Landslide in Nagpur

BJP candidate Dr. Rajiv Potdar recorded a massive victory in the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency.

Potdar secured 682 votes, while the Congress candidate managed only 130 votes. Eleven votes were declared invalid. The result further cemented Nagpur's reputation as a BJP stronghold.

Mahayuti Scores Big in Dharashiv

In the Dharashiv Local Authorities Constituency, Mahayuti-backed BJP candidate Basavaraj Patil emerged victorious with 845 votes. Fourteen votes were declared invalid during counting.

Political analysts believe the result reflects the BJP's growing influence in the Marathwada region.

Political Significance

The overall results indicate that the BJP and the Mahayuti alliance continue to enjoy a strong position in Maharashtra's local political landscape. However, the victory of independent candidate Gokul Gite in Nashik suggests that local-level dissent and rebel candidates can still pose serious challenges to established alliances.

For the opposition, particularly Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction, the results are likely to trigger introspection ahead of future local body and Assembly elections. The outcomes are also expected to influence political calculations in the run-up to upcoming electoral battles across Maharashtra.

Talking to reporters here today Athawale said although the Ladki Bahin scheme is putting some pressure on the government exchequer, the state government should fulfill its promise to provide more funds to the Ladki Bahin despite bearing the pressure.

He said that according to the financial report of the current financial year, it is seen that the expenditure of the state is more than the revenue income. However, there is a possibility of a significant increase in the revenue income of the state in the coming years. According to the agreements signed with various industries in Davos, an investment of Rs 15 lakh 90 thousand crore will come to the state. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister Fadnavis and the cabinet will definitely improve the financial situation of the state by taking some other measures.

Some decisions of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have been canceled by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Due to this, an atmosphere of tension is being created between Shinde and Fadnavis. In fact, during Shinde's tenure as Chief Minister and in the current government led by Fadnavis, the Chief Minister and both the Deputy Chief Ministers discuss and take any decision together, he suggests.

In a conversation during his 'Jan Samman Yatra', Ajit Pawar said that preparations are underway for the Maharashtra Assembly elections and seat sharing talks between the ruling alliance partners NCP, Shiv Sena and BJP are progressing positively. It is worth noting that Ajit Pawar and some MLAs close to him broke ties with Sharad Pawar's party in July last year and joined the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Later the party was named NCP and Ajit Pawar also got the election symbol. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP SP is part of the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi. Apart from Sharad Pawar's NCP SP, the Maha Vikas Aghadi also includes Congress and Shiv Sena UBT.

Seat sharing talks underway

Speaking about seat sharing for the upcoming state elections, Pawar said he has spoken to Shiv Sena leader Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis two-three times and the talks are progressing in a positive manner. On the dates for elections in Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar said it is the Election Commission's job to decide. Ajit Pawar advocated an all-party meeting to discuss the Maratha community's demand for reservation in education and government jobs. Ajit Pawar said opposition parties cannot be ignored as they also represent the people.

Pawar said, 'Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had called an all-party meeting to discuss the reservation issue, but the opposition kept away from the meeting. I don't know if the boycott was intentional or not. He said time will be sought from them (the opposition) again.' Lauding the Mukhyamantri Ladki Behen Yojana, Pawar said the scheme will be launched on August 17 at a programme in Balewadi where beneficiaries will receive money for July and August. CM Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis will attend the programme.

What did Ajit Pawar say on reuniting with Sharad Pawar

On being asked about the mistake he referred to in connection with the fight between Supriya Sule and his wife Sunetra in the Baramati Lok Sabha elections was political or personal, he said, "There is nothing intentional in speaking about a mistake. I am the master of my mind. I speak my mind. I am a simple person." He refused to speak on the rift in the Pawar family (due to the NCP split). When asked about the possibility of reuniting with Sharad Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister said, "I will just talk about my work and vision for Maharashtra. We will ask people to give us a chance again so that we can bring more money for the state." The opposition is always negative.
