Kolkata residents will be able to enjoy a fresh view of the Hooghly riverfront at Kumartuli ghat this Durga Puja, with the authorities of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port planning a complete revamp of the iconic ghat before the festive season begins.

The redevelopment of the ghat was started last year following an MoU between the city port and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ). The agreement was signed on 11 July 2025 to carry out the restoration works under a CSR initiative.

According to port sources, repairing and retrofitting of the heritage structures at the ghat including temples, and shrines have been completed. For this, traditional techniques to preserve the precinct’s sacred ambience have been used. In addition, the authorities have strengthened the river banks, upgraded the platforms used for performing rituals, and revamped the pedestrian walkways.

Apart from this, dedicated zones for artisans, cultural events, recreation, boating, deck views, food courts, souvenir stalls and community toilets have also been set up. The restored ghat will also have green embankments, native riverine plantations and groves inspired by Vrindavan after being redeveloped.

Work on architectural illumination of the ghats and Kumartuli facades along with first aid and surveillance systems have also been done.

“Kumartuli is Kolkata’s cultural soul," said chairman of the city port, Rathendra Raman.

“Through this partnership with APSEZ Ltd., we are not just restoring infrastructure but reviving a space woven into West Bengal’s identity. The project will make the ghat safer, cleaner, and more welcoming for all,” he said.
It was learnt that the redevelopment would be done in phases to ensure minimal disruption, especially during Durga Puja. The restoration project is being carried out at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
