PUNE, 5 NOV. The Maharashtra State Election Commission has announced the schedule for the Municipal Council (Nagar Parishad) and Nagar Panchayat elections. According to the schedule, candidates have until November 21 to withdraw their names in places where no objections have been filed, and until November 25 where objections have been registered. This leaves candidates with a very limited time of only four days for the election campaign.

Voting for the Municipal Councils will take place on December 2, and the campaign period will cease on November 30. In areas where objections are registered, the final list of candidates will be released, and election symbols will be distributed on November 26. As per Election Commission rules, a large number of objections are usually filed in Municipal Council elections, meaning candidates will have very little time for campaigning.

Doubt Over Alliance Activity

In the last Municipal Council elections, political parties largely contested independently. However, the situation has completely changed this time due to party splits and new alliances. While there is a continuous influx of new leaders into the Bharatiya Janata Party, there is significant doubt regarding the level of activity of both the Maha Vikas Aghadi and Mahayuti alliances at the local level.

Aspirants Prepare to Contest Independently

Elections have been announced for 14 Municipal Councils and 3 Nagar Panchayats in the district. However, it is still unclear whether parties will contest in alliance or independently. This uncertainty has created confusion among aspiring candidates. While some leaders began contacting voters during the Dussehra-Diwali period, the political calculations have been upset by the change in reservation status for several seats.

With new faces continuously joining the BJP, some long-time party workers are likely to be denied tickets. Consequently, many leaders have started preparing to contest the elections independently.

Changing Local Dynamics

In Daund Municipal Council, the influence of the "Nagrik Hit Sanrakshan Mandal va Mitra Paksha" led by Premsukh Kadariya has been significant. Previously, it had 12 Corporators from the Nationalist Congress and 2 from Shiv Sena. Even with the changing political equations, the local front is likely to be decisive.

Similarly, in Shirur Municipal Council, Prakash Dhariwal's "Vikas Aghadi" won 18 seats last time. Despite the presence of BJP, NCP, Congress, and other parties, the dominance of the local front is expected to continue.
