For the first time in three decades, the post of Lonavala Municipal Council Chairperson has been reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, sparking renewed political activity in the hill town. Among the aspirants, educated and experienced candidate Ashok Mankar has emerged as a leading contender, political circles say.

Mankar, belonging to the Charmakar community, has been active in social and educational initiatives and is known for his developmental work under the guidance of MLA Sunil Shelke. With prior administrative and representative experience, Mankar is regarded as a leader with vision, integrity, and commitment to the city’s comprehensive development.

Citizens reportedly hold strong trust in his leadership, citing his contributions to various public welfare and civic projects.

As the mayoral seat falls under the SC category for the first time since 1996, several potential candidates from the community are expected to enter the race. However, Mankar’s educational background, administrative experience, and developmental record appear to give him an early edge.

Locals have expressed the need for transparent, capable, and socially sensitive leadership to guide Lonavala’s growth—qualities many say are reflected in Mankar’s public work and persona.
