Sangli (Maharashtra) : Political tensions escalated in Sangli on Wednesday as leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and allied groups staged a protest march against derogatory comments made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopichand Padalkar. The demonstration, titled Maharashtra Sanskriti Bachao Morcha (Save Maharashtra’s Culture March), drew participation from senior leaders across the state and underscored concerns about the declining tone of political discourse.

Shashikant Shinde’s Warning
NCP state president Shashikant Shinde criticized the erosion of Maharashtra’s political culture, contrasting it with the dignified leadership of Yashwantrao Chavan and Vasantdada Patil. “Some leaders have dragged politics into the gutter. The NCP will not tolerate any disrespect toward Maharashtra’s icons, nor will we bow to the arrogance of power,” he warned.

The Protest March
The rally began at Karmveer Bhaurao Patil Chowk and wound through key points in Sangli city before culminating at Station Chowk. Leaders condemned Padalkar’s alleged insults against veteran leaders Rajaram Bapu Patil and Jayant Patil, asserting that such language undermined the state’s cultural and political traditions.

Respect for Legacy and Culture
Speakers invoked the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, stating that Padalkar’s remarks insulted Maharashtra’s values. Vishal Patil, while acknowledging his political differences with Jayant Patil, insisted that opponents must be treated with dignity. He recalled how earlier rivalries, including those between Vasantdada Patil and Rajaram Bapu, were conducted with mutual respect.

NCP leader Jitendra Awhad stressed that political competition should never cross into personal attacks, particularly against women. “We will never tolerate disrespect toward women in Maharashtra,” he declared.

Toxic Political Climate
Several leaders voiced concern over the growing use of inflammatory language in politics, accusing some individuals of exploiting caste and religious divisions for political gain. “This is not the culture of Maharashtra,” said one speaker, adding that politics should remain a battle of ideas, not insults.

The protest highlighted the volatile political environment in the state, with NCP leaders accusing the BJP of lowering moral and cultural standards in the pursuit of power.
