U.S. President Donald Trump has once again repeated his claim that he personally intervened to prevent a potential war between India and Pakistan. Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said he directly warned Pakistan in blunt terms and within five hours, tensions cooled down.

Trump’s Warning to Pakistan

According to Trump, when tensions were escalating, he first spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I told him, I’m talking to a wonderful man, but what’s going on with Pakistan?” Trump recalled. He then claimed he called Pakistan and issued a stern warning: “If you continue this, the U.S. will not make any trade deals with you. Instead, I’ll impose such high tariffs that your head will spin.”

Trump said he told Islamabad: “You’re talking about trade while going to war with India? You’re heading into a nuclear war. If this continues, I’ll hit you with tariffs so high you won’t believe it. I don’t care. No trade, no deal.” Within five hours, he asserted, the crisis calmed down.

“Could Happen Again”

Trump added: “Maybe it could start again, I don’t know. But if it does, I’ll stop it. We can’t allow such things to happen.”

Fighter Jet Claims

During his remarks, Trump also repeated his earlier claim that at least seven fighter jets were shot down in the India-Pakistan clash. “I saw they were fighting. Then I heard seven jets were downed $150 million worth of planes destroyed. Both sides underreported the losses,” he said, without clarifying whether the aircraft belonged to India, Pakistan, or both.

Not the First Time

This is not the first time Trump has asserted that he played a decisive role in defusing an India-Pakistan standoff, particularly after the Pulwama attack. India, however, has consistently dismissed such claims, maintaining that the ceasefire decisions were the result of direct military-to-military communication between New Delhi and Islamabad, with no third-party mediation.
