The proposal was passed in the House with 88 votes in favor and 52 against. While the measure still requires approval from the state Senate and the governor, both controlled by Republicans, its passage is considered almost certain.

The redistricting move follows a call from former President Donald Trump to review congressional maps after five years, widely seen as an effort to benefit the Republican Party. Democrats, however, have vowed to challenge the new map in court, alleging it was deliberately designed to favor Republicans.

Texas Republicans have been unapologetic about their approach. State Representative Todd Hunter, who authored the redistricting bill, said the U.S. Supreme Court has already allowed lawmakers to redraw districts for openly partisan purposes.
