Scientists convene in Hyderabad to explore alternatives to animal testing

Hyderabad, 8 October 2025

A three-day national conference aimed at finding alternatives to animal use in scientific experiments began at the CSIR–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, today. The event, titled SAAE-I 2025 Conference, is being jointly organised by the Society for Alternatives to Animal Experiments–India (SAAE-I) and CSIR-CCMB and will continue till October 10. The conference has drawn more than 180 participants from universities, research organisations, and industries across the country. It provides a platform to share ideas and discuss innovations that align with the global principle of 3Rs — Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement — in animal research.

The programme includes keynote addresses, oral and poster presentations, and interactive sessions covering diverse fields such as organoid models, in vitro systems, computational biology, toxicology, and ethical research innovations. Speaking about the initiative, Dr Bokara Kiran Kumar, Principal Scientist, and Dr Mohammed Idris, Chief Scientist at CSIR-CCMB, emphasised that humane science is gaining global momentum.

“The search for alternatives to animal experiments is crucial to minimise animal use while maintaining scientific accuracy. Modern approaches like organoid and stem-cell-based models, in vitro systems, computational simulations, and AI-driven predictive toxicology are transforming biomedical research,” they said. They added that by hosting this event, CSIR-CCMB reaffirms its commitment to advancing cutting-edge research while upholding ethical scientific practices.
