Shivakumar condemns the alleged attack on CJI
Bengaluru, 8 October 2025
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivkumar today condemned the alleged attempt to attack Chief Justice of India B R Gavai inside the Supreme Court, calling the act "highly condemnable" and demanding strict action.
Speaking to the media, Shivkumar said, "He is the CJI. Although the CJI has stated that no action will be taken, strict action must still be taken. It is wrong. They must take suo moto action"
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed his condemnation, stating that anyone attempting such an act should be debarred. He criticised those creating tension under the guise of Manusmriti and Sanatan Dharma, adding that such a mindset persists even 78 years after independence. Kharge thanked lawyers and institutions who spoke out against the attack and in defence of fundamental rights.
The incident occurred on October 6 when 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore entered Court Room 1 of the Supreme Court and attempted to throw an object at CJI Gavai. Security personnel immediately restrained and arrested him.
According to sources, Kishore shouted, "Sanatan ka apman nahi sahega Hindustan," while being escorted out. Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) ordered the immediate suspension of Kishore's legal practice after prima facie evidence suggested he tried to hurl his sports shoes at the Chief Justice during proceedings.
