Political discussions have intensified in the Shirur Lok Sabha constituency amid speculation that former MP Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil may once again join the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde. The recent visit of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to Landevadi and the political developments surrounding the meeting have added further fuel to the speculation.

Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil had joined the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) with the aim of securing the Mahayuti’s nomination. However, discussions continued in political circles after the election that Patil remained emotionally and politically connected to Shiv Sena.

Following Shinde’s recent visit to Landevadi, speculation has once again gained momentum that Patil could be on his way back to the Shiv Sena.

Political observers point out that Patil’s political identity was built largely through Shiv Sena. He led the party in the Shirur Lok Sabha constituency for several years and continues to have a substantial base of supporters and party workers, particularly in rural areas.

Against this backdrop, his possible return could provide fresh momentum to Shiv Sena in the constituency, political observers believe.

Interestingly, even after joining the NCP, Patil is understood to have maintained contact with several of his former colleagues in Shiv Sena. This has generated curiosity among his supporters regarding the possibility of his political return. His supporters continue to describe him as a “Shiv Sainik at heart.”

There is, however, no official information about the exact political discussions that took place during the meeting at Landevadi. Nevertheless, the meeting assumes significance in view of the upcoming local body elections and the possibility of changes in political alliances and equations in the region.

The question now being discussed in Shirur and across Pune district is whether Adhalrao Patil will take off the NCP’s wristwatch and once again take up Shiv Sena’s bow and arrow.

Neither Shiv Sena nor Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil has so far made any official announcement regarding a possible return. Until an official declaration is made, therefore, the developments remain a matter of political speculation and discussion.

The Maharashtra Cabinet’s in-principle approval for the proposed Dimbhe-Manikdoh tunnel under the Kukadi Project has triggered concern among farmers in Ambegaon, Shirur and Junnar talukas. The development is being viewed as particularly unfortunate by sections of the farming community in Ambegaon, where the project has faced local opposition.

Senior Nationalist Congress Party leader and Ambegaon MLA Dilip Walse Patil has consistently opposed the Dimbhe-Manikdoh tunnel, maintaining that the interests of farmers in the region must be protected. His opposition has once again come into focus following the state Cabinet’s recent decision.

The issue came to light after it was reported that the proposed tunnel, which was not part of the original Kukadi Project, had been included in the fourth revised administrative approval for the project, estimated at ₹5,704.50 crore. The development has reportedly caused strong resentment among farmers in Ambegaon, Shirur and Junnar.

Taking immediate cognisance of the matter, former Maharashtra Assembly Speaker and MLA Dilip Walse Patil met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and conveyed the strong opposition of local farmers to the proposed tunnel.

At the state Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, September 1, the proposal for the fourth revised administrative approval of the Kukadi Project, amounting to ₹5,704.50 crore, was reportedly approved. After learning that the Dimbhe-Manikdoh tunnel was included in the proposal, Walse Patil raised his objections at the government level and before the state Cabinet.

Farmers and local residents have reportedly urged political representatives across party lines in Ambegaon taluka to adopt a united stand against the project rather than allowing political differences to come in the way of the issue. There is disappointment among sections of farmers that political leaders from different parties have not yet come together on a common platform to oppose the proposed tunnel.

Concerns over irrigation water

Walse Patil has reportedly brought to the Chief Minister’s attention the possibility that the tunnel could affect irrigation water available to farmers in Ambegaon, Shirur and Junnar talukas.

According to the concerns raised by him, the Dimbhe-Manikdoh tunnel could potentially have an adverse impact in the future on the irrigation water rights of farmers in these areas. Walse Patil has maintained that local farmers should not be subjected to injustice under any circumstances.

Against this backdrop, Walse Patil has demanded that necessary changes be made to the Cabinet decision and that approval for the Dimbhe-Manikdoh tunnel should not be granted. He personally submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in this regard.

It has been stated that, taking note of Walse Patil’s position, Chief Minister Fadnavis assured him that necessary changes would be considered in the Cabinet decision and that no injustice would be allowed to farmers in Ambegaon, Shirur and Junnar talukas.

A decisive battle for Ambegaon?

Dilip Walse Patil has represented Ambegaon for nearly four decades and has been consistently working against the proposed Dimbhe-Manikdoh tunnel, according to the report.

Whether his efforts ultimately succeed remains to be seen. For now, however, his sustained opposition to the project has assumed considerable significance for Ambegaon taluka. The coming period will determine whether his “lone battle” succeeds in preventing the tunnel from moving forward.

In a major boost for women-led agriculture, women farmers from Ranjani village in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district have successfully exported 29.5 tonnes of onions to Dubai, securing a significantly higher price than the domestic market.

The export initiative was facilitated by the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MAVIM) through the Jigyasa Community Managed Resource Centre (CMRC), Manchar, under the Vegetable Production and Marketing Partnership Sub-Project.

The onions were exported through Vishwas and Growth Pvt. Ltd., Pune. While quality onions were fetching around ₹16 per kg in the local market during the second week of June, the export consignment earned farmers ₹20 per kg, providing much-needed financial relief.

The success was made possible by the onion storage warehouse and curing facility established by the Shri Bhimashankar Agro Farmer Producer Company in Ranjani. The storage infrastructure enabled farmers to preserve their produce during periods of low prices and export it when market conditions became favourable.

Women members of the Narsingh Self-Help Group, Ambika Mata Self-Help Group, and Vighnaharta Self-Help Group benefited from the initiative, which helped them access international markets for their produce.

The successful export has generated enthusiasm among women farmers and self-help groups across Ambegaon taluka, highlighting the growing role of collective farming, value-chain support, and export-oriented agriculture in improving rural incomes.

Several officials and representatives from MAVIM, the Jigyasa Community Managed Resource Centre, the Agriculture Department, and local farmer producer organisations were present during the event.

The long-pending dream of a semi-high-speed railway connecting Pune and Nashik has suffered a major setback, with indications that India's first such corridor may now be developed between Ahmedabad and Dholera in Gujarat rather than in Maharashtra.

The development has triggered renewed debate over the fate of the original Pune–Rajgurunagar–Sangamner–Nashik railway alignment, which was subsequently shelved following objections related to the buffer zone of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observatory at Khodad in Pune district.

Critics argue that the cancellation of the original route reflects a lack of political will and inadequate efforts to reconcile infrastructure development with scientific concerns. They contend that before abandoning the project, authorities should have undertaken a broader scientific evaluation involving multiple research institutions to explore solutions that could mitigate the impact of railway operations on the observatory.

The original railway corridor was viewed as a transformative infrastructure project for the Pune–Rajgurunagar–Sangamner–Nashik belt, promising improved connectivity for farmers, industries, businesses, students, and daily commuters across the region.

Questions have also been raised about the decision to replace the original alignment with a proposed Nashik–Shirdi–Ahmednagar–Chakan–Pune route. Opponents of the revised plan claim the new alignment is significantly longer and could delay the realization of a direct rail link between the two major cities.

At the heart of the controversy are concerns regarding radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic emissions from railway operations, which scientists fear could affect the highly sensitive observations conducted by the GMRT facility. Critics, however, argue that modern engineering solutions, including route realignment, underground tunnelling, speed restrictions, or alternative traction systems in sensitive zones, deserved greater examination before the project was abandoned.

Supporters of the original alignment point out that highways carrying thousands of vehicles already operate near the observatory's buffer zone, questioning whether technological measures could have been developed to minimize railway-related interference as well.

The Pune–Nashik railway proposal dates back to 2013 when it received approval from then Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal. In 2021, the project received renewed attention when the Maharashtra government announced plans for a semi-high-speed rail service between the two cities.

Despite more than a decade of discussions, surveys, land acquisition exercises, and political announcements, the project remains stalled. Infrastructure experts note that even if a semi-high-speed service proves difficult to implement, authorities could still examine the feasibility of a conventional high-speed regional rail network capable of operating at speeds of 100–130 kmph.

As the Ahmedabad–Dholera corridor moves forward, stakeholders in Maharashtra fear that a strategically important transport project for western Maharashtra may be indefinitely delayed unless fresh efforts are made to revisit the original alignment and explore scientifically viable alternatives.

The debate underscores the broader challenge of balancing scientific research infrastructure with large-scale public development projects, while ensuring that long-promised transportation investments do not remain confined to policy announcements alone.

A pond development project at Khadki Talav in Waghobachiwadi, under Pimpargane Gram Panchayat in the western part of Ambegaon taluka, was formally inaugurated on Wednesday (June 10). The project was undertaken through the efforts of Janjati Kalyan Ashram, Pune Mahanagar.

Several dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony, including Company Head Anil Kumbhar, CSR Head Chandan Shirsagar, Janjati Kalyan Ashram Pune Mahanagar Vice President Sunil Bhosale, Joint Secretary Yogesh Kulkarni, Pune Division Organising Minister Arun Kathe, Raju Punekar, Sachin Tagad, Anulom Shirur Assembly Constituency Head Yogesh Chapte, Seva Sahyog Head Chintaman Wadekar, former Sarpanch Chitaman Wadekar, contractor Nitin Kharat, Taluka Head Vaman Bhoir, Gram Panchayat member Pandurang Pardhi, social activists Chahu Pardhi, Devji Wadekar and Namdev Wadekar, along with villagers, members of women's groups and other prominent guests.

The visiting dignitaries were welcomed and felicitated by the local villagers.

Speaking on behalf of the villagers, social worker Chahu Pardhi expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work carried out. He stated that the newly developed pond would help alleviate the recurring drinking water shortage faced by residents of the area.

Company Head Anil Kumbhar also expressed satisfaction that the project had been implemented at a location where it would have a meaningful impact on the community.

The event was compered by Arun Kathe and concluded with appreciation from villagers for the successful completion of the water conservation initiative, which is expected to benefit the local community significantly.

A notable example of his administrative capabilities was his role in organizing infrastructure and logistical arrangements for the grand Panch Kalyanak Mahotsav held at the newly established Namokar Tirth in Malsane village, Chandwad taluka, in 2026.

Four young men and women from farming families in Ambegaon taluka have successfully completed their training as Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs) and officially joined the Maharashtra Police force, bringing pride to the region.

Overcoming financial constraints, rural hardships and the challenges of competitive examinations, the four candidates completed a rigorous one-year training programme at the Police Training Centre in Nashik. They formally began their service in the police department on Tuesday.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister and MLA from the Ambegaon-Shirur Assembly constituency, Dileep Walse Patil, congratulated the newly appointed officers and praised their determination and hard work.

The successful candidates are Bhagyashree Jagannath Jadhav from Jadhavwadi, Prashant Baban Dangat from Nirgudsar, Shweta Sukhdev Karande from Kathapur and Swapnil Machhindra Hinge from Avasari Budruk. All four hail from farmer families and achieved success through dedication, perseverance and disciplined preparation.

During their training in Nashik, they received comprehensive instruction in physical fitness, criminal investigation, law enforcement procedures, police station administration, maintenance of law and order, communication skills and leadership development.

At the graduation ceremony held in Nashik on Tuesday, Maharashtra Director General of Police Sadanand Date awarded certificates to 583 trainee Police Sub-Inspectors from across the state and extended his best wishes for their future careers.

The occasion was an emotional and proud moment for parents and family members, who witnessed the culmination of years of struggle and sacrifice.

The appointments of the four officers are as follows:
